SESB: Sabah power outages due to repairs

Written By Unknown on 5 Jul 2013 | Friday, July 05, 2013

KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans will have to brace for more possible electricity disruptions due to repair works over the next 25 days, says the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB).

This was because critical repairs have to be carried out on generators at an independent power producer (IPP) in Sepangar here from today onwards.

SESB said that the repairs by the operators of the IPP was expected to be completed by July 30 and the state was likely to face electricity generation shortfall of about 90MW.

“The IPP needs to shut down its power generation to carry out critical maintenance and repairs on its generators,’’ SESB senior general manager Ahmad Fuad Kassim said yesterday.

He said that the shutting down of the IPP plant for repairs would have an impact on their daily 955MW power production as peak demand could reach up to 866.6MW in Sabah.

He said that SESB had asked all big power users in Sabah and Labuan to use their own generators while the repairs were being carried out.

“Load shedding will be the last option and will only be implemented if they were unable to meet the power demand,” he added.

Consumers can visit the SESB website at www.sesb.com.my for load shedding schedules which would be updated daily except on weekends.

On another matter, Ahmad Fuad urged consumers to be wary of certain individuals posing as SESB personnel asking for payment to change their old electricity meters.

He said that old electricity meters would be changed for free and that SESB had never appointed any company or individuals to carry out the changes.

“We have received reports of the scam which happened in some areas in Sandakan and Tawau.
“If you have seen them, please lodge a police report or call SESB,” he added.
