PETALING JAYA: All tour packages to Egypt have been temporarily halted due to the on-going political crisis in Egypt.
Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) vice-president (outbound) Jeffri Sulaiman said the association received a notice from the Foreign Ministry advising Malaysians to postpone and reschedule their visits to Egypt.
However, he said tours booked prior to the ouster of Egypt president Mohamed Morsi by travel agencies have yet to receive cancellations or complaints from customers.
Jeffri said the Malaysian embassy in Cairo had advised Malaysians there to stay away from large gatherings and demonstrations. They were also told to keep in touch with the embassy officials.
He added that tour agencies have provided customers with alternate options to travel to destinations such as Turkey, Jakarta, Bosnia and Istanbul.
A customer service officer for Poto Travel Agency, which organises tour packages to Egypt, said the company has already put on hold tours to Egypt since May following reports of violent clashes between supporters and opponents of Morsi.
“The next travel date to Egypt may resume in October if the situation improves,” she added.
An EgyptAir spokesman said a number of tour groups have cancelled flights to Egypt.
“However, scheduled flights to and from Egypt are going on as usual. This is because passengers are taking transit flights to Cairo before flying to other destinations,” he added.
