Police back calls for EO-like laws to help curb violent crime

KUALA LUMPUR: The police are backing the calls to introduce new special preventive laws similar to the now-repealed Emergency Ordinance (EO), says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

“I am confident violent crimes can be curbed if new laws similar to the EO are introduced.

“With the new laws, the police will be able to put away hardened criminals,” he told a press conference after the handing over of 10 Mitsubishi GT Lancer 2.0 cars to the Bukit Aman Traffic department yesterday. The cars were donated by PLUS Malaysia Berhad.

He was commenting on The Star’s report on Wednesday, which said the abolition of the EO had put nearly 2,000 suspected hardened criminals back on the streets.

Police believe that many of these thugs are responsible for the recent spike in violent crimes.

On the online Police Reporting System (PRS), which enables motorists to lodge traffic-related reports at any police station, Khalid said the PRS will be extended to Sabah and Sarawak by the end of this year.

He said the system, which was introduced in the peninsula in 2011, would be managed nationwide once it is integrated with the two states.

“It is more difficult to install the system in both the states given the large area and mountainous terrain there.

“We hope the integration process will be completed by December,” he added.

Khalid also said police planned to install cameras on their patrol vehicles.

On the latest ATM robberies at several places in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Khalid said police would meet the representatives of banks to finds ways to resolve the problem.

It was reported that three ATMs were broken into at separate places in Cheras, Kepong and Puchong on Wednesday.

Earlier, Khalid said the new police cars would be used by the Expressway Mobile Patrol Vehicle (EMPV) unit.

PLUS chairman Tan Sri Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim, who also attended the handing-over ceremony, said motorists could benefit from closer cooperation between police and the highway concessionaire.
