SOCIAL MEDIA: Seek clarification from the proper authorities

CYBERJAYA: THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has urged the public to stop sending, sharing and  posting "hate speech" in the social media.

MCMC chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said yesterday the public should be more sensitive and aware while communicating online.

"Think about the consequences and the feelings of our fellow brothers and sisters before posting comments and opinions in social media."

He said public should avoid communicating when emotions were running high.

Sharil said the public should not be influenced by emotions and issues that were detrimental to the harmony of the country.

He said every citizen in the country must abide by the laws and regulations pertaining to both online and offline platforms.

"If there are individuals who are unhappy with certain issues and need explanation, it should be channelled to the proper authorities, in accordance with the rule of law."

He reminded the public that not all information published in social media should be accepted as the truth.

It was vital, Sharil said, for the public to verify the authenticity of the information before sharing it as the sender of any information was capable of disguise or identity fraud.
