PADANG BESAR: A man was killed when the car he was driving, equipped with an additional modified fuel tank, caught fire after it skidded and crashed into a tree at Km12.4 Jalan Padang Melangit-Guar Jentik, here, yesterday morning.
Padang Besar district police chief Superintendent Che Man Md Dros said they believed the victim, Chong Swee Voon, 43, had died a few minutes after the crash which occurred about 6am."The victim was heading towards Guar Jentik from Padang Melangit when he lost control of the speeding Proton Saga car, causing it to skid before crashing into a tree. We believe that due to the installation of the additional fuel tank, which was carrying some amount of fuel in it, and the impact of the collision, had caused the car to catch fire.
Che Man said self-employed Chong, who was also on fire, had tried to escape from the burning car but did not make it far as he died some five metres from his vehicle.
He said Chong could have died due to the more than 50 per cent burns and other injuries.
"The car has been found to have been equipped with an additional modified fuel tank at the rear passenger seat. We also have found that the car belongs to the victim as it is registered under his name."
Che Man said the body was sent to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar for a post-mortem and will be then released to the family.
Chong leaves a 39-year-old Thai national wife and three daughters aged 5, 10 and 12.
