Puchong MP: Government's move to repeal Emergency Ordinance was populist

PETALING JAYA: The Government should have carried out proper studies before deciding to repeal the Emergency Ordinance (EO), said an Opposition MP.

Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo claimed the Government’s move to repeal the EO was a populist decision.

“The Government failed to put into place measures to deal with the sudden release of the EO detainees back into society.

“The Prime Minister should not hide behind complaints by the police to convince us that preventive laws are necessary to justify bringing back the ordinance,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The Opposition had called for the repeal of the EO and other laws such as Internal Security Act.

However, Gobind said bringing back the ordinance would be wrong as it involved detention without trial which led to serious abuse over the years.

“What is now required is a complete overhaul of the laws which relate to police powers and detention.

“The Government should head back to the drawing board and come up with a holistic plan to solve this problem at all levels,” he said.
