BUTTERWORTH: Penang Customs have confiscated 2,226 crates of beer with unpaid duties valued at RM281,902 in Bukit Mertajam.
Three suspects aged 26, 28 and 30, including two foreign workers, were detained during the raid on a shophouse at 4.35pm on Friday, state Customs director Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said.
He said the crates of beer, comprising 42,144 cans and 6,264 bottles of various brands, were valued at RM84,683.
He said the officers also found a machine believed to be used to remove the “Malaysian Duty Not Paid” print on the bottom of the cans.
“We have released the suspects on bail after questioning them.
“However, we are unsure if the consignment was to be used locally or to be exported,” Zulkifli told a press conference at the Customs’ Prevention Complex in Prai yesterday.
